Re: dancing on point

For the most part, men do no dance on pointe on stage.  But there are some exceptions; Bottom in "A Midsummer Night's Dream" is an example.  It's certainly a useful skill.

Dancing on pointe is very difficult, very technical, it requires a lot of strength in your feet.  If you practice en pointe and develop that strength, it will only serve to help your dancing.  Many men study pointe at times because of the benefits it can give to their dancing.

As a man in ballet, you really can't afford to be girlish.  Men are so rare and ladies are so common; the men need to be very manly on stage and lift the ladies.  Sorry to say, but that's the facts of life.  You'll never make as good a girl as the real girls, and they need you too much as a man.

But there are a few exceptions.  There are some ballet companies in which the men all dance the girls' roles as well as the men's roles.  It's a kind of comedy ballet.  Of course, if you want to dance for THOSE companies, you need to be very good at dancing en pointe.

Maybe in your ballet studies, you can cut a deal with your teacher.  You really do need to act manly, especially in any dances or recitals you do.  But in the studio, it's different.  Maybe sometimes you can be a bit more girly, if that's what you like.  Maybe your teacher would let you study pointe if you do your best to learn how to dance manly.
