The 37-Year Itch...Scratched!

written by Dep  on 02.04. at 13:00:02
>>>Way back when your humble tightsman was your humble tightsboy, my fave TV show was "The Banana Splits" (remember Fleagle, Bingo, Drooper and Snork?) The main reason for my tuning in every saturday morning was not the Splits themselves (though I loved 'em, still do,) but rather their rivals, "The Sour Grapes Bunch." The Bunch were played by a succession of cute girls the same age I was, and they wore a uniform consisting of go-go boots, a WAY short minidress with a turtleneck and good old you-know-whats. We didn't get a color TV until well into the seventies, so I never knew what actual color my dreamgirls were wearing. Until about half an hour ago, that is.>>>Boomerang has been showing the Splits as part of their late-night programming, and I've been watching it for a while. They shaved the show from an hour to a half, and edited the heck out of the sequences featuring the Splits. Never a glimpse of the goddesses of my childhood, which I put down to good old fashioned caution on Boomerang's part. See, the Grapes would never speak, only...dance. The Pony, if I remember correctly. The hemline was short, the dance had a lot of bounce, Hanna and Barbera were pretty smart guys when it came to marketing animal-costume shows to boys, now weren't they? Anyway, up all night (gotta drive Dea to the airport,) watching the Splits idly as I read my Warhammer 40K (don't ask,) suddenly I hear Drooper say, "It's The Sour Grapes Bunch!" My head snaps up like a trebuchet, and suddenly I'm ten again. And an actual Sour Grapes girl is dancing around on my big old color set. Raspberry-purple mini, lavender tights. Mystery solved. Can't believe they let me watch that girl dance like that when I was ten. But I'm thankful!-D
