In my experience, most gym rats do NOT choose their attire...they wear the same gym wear they wore in high school.

You also said: "I seriously doubt any dog I've ever known has given much thought to the appearance of his coat (smell is another matter since they seem to appreciate a certain amount of "funk" and hate attempts to bathe them to human standards)"

I have to differ.  I've know many dogs.  My close buddy now, Dixie, is very concerned about the appearance of her coat....she grooms herself more than any of our cats.

And as to "funk" .... dogs look at this differently, because that "funk" is actually a way of communication between dogs.  Dixie leaves her messages for the male dogs, telling them them about her fertility status, her age, and other important factors. And this is not my imagination...there's plenty of reseach that's investigated this form of communication.

Doctors know that urine and stool samples can indicate disease; why shouldn't dogs have realised that this "funk" is also important in recognizing their "friends?"

Back to the topic....I do not like sanctimoneous gym rats, and believe the average dog has more sense of anything.  So we agree, except that these sick-o gym rats should not be compared to the more noble canine.

(Hey!  This has been real fun!)

Love and kisses (especially for my canine friends)!  balletboy
