You asked: >How does one go about telling your parent/friends that you want to start ballet?

First question....how old are you?  If you're a pre-teen, I'd suggest that you just come out with it.  Tell them you want to take ballet for the reason you want.  When I asked my mother I was about 4 or 5.  I was the uncoordinated one with the older brother who could do anything physical.  I saw ballet danseurs on TV and really admired the way they could move and leap.

If you're a teen, some of it's the same.  You still should tell everyone the real reason you want to take ballet.  When I was a teen I told my friends that I took ballet classes to help me be less awkward.  The real reason was that I thought it was fun, really fun, and I enjoyed being with other danseurs.  Somehow I didn't 'fess up to that.

If you're out of high-school and living at home, tell the truth!  If you want to, for the experience, say you want to.  You're old enough to consider doing what you believe will enhance your life's experience.

If you're in college and want to start, you should tell the truth.  Alternatively you could say you need a physical education credit and ballet was the only class that was open when you got there!  I had friends that used this excuse becuase they didn't want to share their feelings.  By this time I was telling people that I took ballet classes because it was fun and I liked the other danseurs.

When you're an adult, the story could be different, but still tell the truth.  The story at the office (for me) was that I needed to stretch out my muscles and ballet was the best way.  My boss hated ballet, but her husband, the president of the company, loved it.  She would say I was taking exercise classes; he would wink!  When I was in performances, I was helping the community children in a theatre performance!

Stories are different, but the truth is the same.  I take ballet because I want to!  Sure I would have loved to have been a professional danseur, but my life didn't work out that way.  Still I never gave up ballet.  IT'S FUN for me!

I've known guys and gals who talk about wanting to have taken ballet....I say there's a beginner class starting next month at..... They still don't take that step.  But next time we're togther they always say I should have taken ballet.

Just go for it.  You don't have to explain yourself to others!  Life really is short!
