I haven't done so myself, but I had a conversation with a guy Isaw taking off a pair of pointe shoes.  He said he had gotten intoit because he needed to in a certain part he had danced.  (Hedidn't say what part.)  And having discovered that he could do it,he kept on because he felt he had a marketable skill & didn't wantto lose it.

My impression is that it depends on your particular body--theshape of the foot (toes of about equal length are better than toesof all different lengths) & the natural strength of your foot &calf muscles.  I never gave pointe a moment's consideration--I'mso lousy at ballet as it is that I don't need any additionalproblems.
