Any type of exercise combined with a healthy diet can help you loose weight.  Although you would probably need to find a 2 hour class as most basic classes do not have the heavy cardio/aerobic workout beginner classes do.  So you may want to search for other routes to get the cardio/aerobic workout you need.

A good place to start is with a visit to your doctor to determine your health and if you can go on a diet and exercise.  Second thing to do is find a nutritionist to develop a diet for you (I did and it is amazing what they help you with).  Third is to remember to relax and have fun.  If you are stressed you will never loose weight (cortisol is what turns normal caloric intake and consumption food into fat and stress causes your body to make cortisol).

Ballet will help with this, althought it may take a years worth of training or more to get results.  I am dancing for about 6 hours a week for 5 years and am finally starting to see some definite body changes in how I move, carry myself (posture), and what my muscles and frame looks like.

You may want to take a pilates class (possibly one specificially for women) as it will also focus on the hips/thighs/buns/and core of your body.  You may possibly find results there faster as pilates really focuses on muscle development and lengthening whereas ballet not only focuses on muscle development and lengthening, but also quality of movement in a different way.  Much of ballet class is focued on how you move as opposed to pilates where you are focusing on what makes you move.  Both of them together is a great way to become a strong dancer.

If you cannot find pilates you may want to go to a yoga class.  There is also some "women's clubs" like "Curves" and "Shapes" here in the USA that focus on the hips/thighs/buns/arms/core and seem to work really well for many of my friends.

Hope it helps you.
