Too heavy for pointe? Too soon? Too late?

written by Serenity at  on 06.04. at 23:43:10
I have a couple of questions.... I am 17 and have only been dancing since Decemeber 2004.( 4 months) Before that i loathed off gymnastics. Whats to heavy to do pointe? Im 5' 4", 115 lbs... hardly overweight, but i once heard my teacher yelling at another who looked about the same size as me, that if she wanted to start pointe she had to drop 10 lbs immediately. I am dying to start pointe.... like dying.. I know its only been 4 months... but it just seems so right. I can do releves in any position u tell me to. Pirouettes are not a problem. Im extremely hyperextended. I am extremely flexible due to soooo many years of gymnastics. I have moved up two leotard colors in 4 months( normally u move up a color every 3 years or so). WHEN is the right time to start pointe? what is the right weight? Is it too late to do anything too? To be anything? My aunt did gymnastics till she was 14, she started pointe in 6 months and when she was 16 she left home to join a professional company. She was THAT good. Mainly the only reasons she did that was because her body was just built for it and the school she went to, has turned out well over 150 professional dancers in 40 years of service. I was told by my instuctor( who danced with my aunt) that i have her body, I will also attend that same school over the summer and next year during the school year.. why i didnt start dancing till now i dont know. I know they dont get paid well and i know how much work it is, but i just love it. Its so much of a passion for me...Gymnastics was just so important to me before, but it was long before i started dancing.  Next year i will take 3 hours every school night along with 5 hours on saturdays. And the farther i get the more hours i take. Is it just too late to do anything? To get anywhere? Am i searching for something im never going to have? I have never loved anything more then dancing in my whole life. Im not looking to get into ABT or anything, but what about like a smaller company, is it possible? Please give your honest opinion... thanks ~~~~~~~~Serenity
