>>>I am a 36 yr old male thinking about starting Ballet Lessons. I have never danced before, but think it would be fun and a good hobby. Due to my age, I am not sure if this is a realistic interest for me. I do not know where to go for lessons and am sure I would be uncomfortable being the "old guy" in the class. Not to mention that I would be somewhat uncomfortable wearing tights.>>>Where should I look for lessons and guidance and maybe see what I am getting myself into? I want to be sure I am not the only 36 yr old in the area who is interested in Ballet.

>Hi!>Don't worry I started at age 38,I'm overweight too. I found a small studio with an Adult class. I'm the only guy but I now have my wife in it. We have a great time! Just jump in. No one cares about the tights, trust me no one notices it's just what you wear. Get a dance belt--it's a must. They take a bit to get used to but you must wear one!>Drop me a note if you want moral support. GO AHEAD AND DO IT!>Been doing 5 years now!>Steve

I have been involved in ballet for two years now and it was truly a great decision.  I know that you will not regret it.  Like any sport, it has its uniform - in ballet it just happens to be something that men do not wear often.  If you are nervous, like I was, you can start off with biking shorts and get more daring as you go.  If you have worn a thong before you have an idea what the dance belt is and if you can get your head around that you will be fine.  As you know a professional dancer wear biking shorts does not exist.  So start out slow and build into it.  I am now happily wearing a full unitard with a racer back (visible thong)and if you were nervous about the tights you would be extremely nervous about this ensemble.  I recommend getting into a unitard down the road - we need more men wearing them.
