>How far do people think dance belts are worn for practical reasons and how far for aesthetics - smoothness and lack of visible detail?>I wear a dance belt when riding horses, and I find it invaluable for protective purposes. As with dance, you want everything up and out of the way. The aesthetic advantages perhaps aren't so evident as with dance as there is less show-through with jodhpurs or breeches as with tights or a leotard (although there can be and it's good to know that won't happen in the middle of a lesson).>So what do you think the most important function of the dance belt is? It it about even? Completely practical? Or less functional than is generally said?

My vote is the most important reason is practical, for protection. Aesthetics comes a close second, however. Ballet is an art, so a garment with a practical purpose is designed with aesthetics kept in mind.
