I've known people in the past that have tried to stop runs, frays, etc. in chemical-based materials like nylon, polyamide, etc. by applying nail polish to the ends.  This is supposed to seal and stop the progressive deterioration.  I'm not sure if it would help in your cases, but it may be worth a shot.
