I've been in love with ballet since I was about 4-years-old. I've taken about every different syllabus and variations there are, and have studied with as many different teachers as I could find over more than 20 years in ballet. Often in my classes nowadays a teacher will say to me "I was taught to do this this way, but tell me how so-and-so would have done this. How is that different in Vaganova, etc."
The truth though is I never went into ballet professionally, but its a REAL serious activity for me.
I gotta tell you, I was anxious to try point work, and in my later twenties, when I was in graduate school, I found a male teacher who did point work, and took classes from him for three months. I had three pairs of custom pointe shoes made, and got into all that was written. At the end of three months I decided, hey this is NOT for me, and haven't been on point since.
I still can do that swans bit at parties with some of my friends, and it's fun, but I can't believe that pointe work ever helped strengthen my abilities or added more to my technique. It just hurt my feet.
But still, everyone is different. If you want to give it a try, I'd say do it. But for me I would concentrate on other aspects of male technique.
Good luck and keep dancing! balletboy

>Hi to all my fellow dancers!! I am a 39 year old man who just started taking ballet lessons. I am in LOVE with ballet. I can not list all the benefits that ballet has done for me. My question however is about Pointe work. Can a guy at my advanced age take Pointe clssaes after a couple of years? Of all the things about ballet, I am very intrigued by trying to take Pointe. Are there any other guys who have managed to dance en Pointe as an older dancer?
