[i]Patrick!
When I first tried pointe, a number of years ago, I went to Freeds in NYC and had a pair custom made ($70.00 in 1983). At that time they were very friendly (since then, I heard a report that they haven't been so welcoming).
I think that if you're serious about taking pointe I would consider having a pair custom made. The male foot is generally different from the stock female forms that any manufacturer uses. The cost may be greater, but the fit will be better.
I've had friends who took pointe, and one problem that seems to always occur is with the shoes. If you can afford a custom pair that fits your foot the best, the training will go better.
Unfortunately, the best advice for buying any shoe is to find the one that fits best, regardless of the price.
Good Luck!
