I having been working as a male dancer for 9 years now. I am currently with the National Dance Association of Britain and we have been touring for the last four months.
the good points about being a male dancer: it keeps be fit and healthy and i love performing in front of an audience.
the bad points: i dont have much time off, i spent about two weeks off in a year and that was because of an injured ankle.
its not as bad as people think being a male dancer. initally i was asked in every company what sexuality i was (this was probably due to both sexes fancing me) As i got older you started to realise who was/wasnt gay. it was very unprofessional to get attached to anyone in work. now that i am married it doesnt really matter to me.
i think there is a greater pressure on men within a dance context. a dancer isnt the greatest paid job and i feel intimidated as a male not being able to solo support a family.
i hope this breif answer has helped in some way.
Alex (27)
