No problem!

Dear Dancer in Despair:

Don't be in despair!  Erections are a normal male function.  There was this great guy on this site, DancingDoc, who wrote a lot about how they are normal.  Go to the website www.danceart.com and log into their message boards.  (Danceart asks for $10 to become a member, but you can read and post messages as a "GUEST" without charge.)

On the danceart message board, Med In Dance, DancingDoc posted a bunch of stuff about erections.  I think the date was about August 18 to 20.  Read those!

In my experience, dancing with an erection is no problem.  I have occasional erections in class and have had them during recitals, and I never missed a beat.  To tell the truth, I'm not embarassed to show my body, and have danced during the summer months in just a dancebelt, trunk (or brief) and cropped t-shirt.  I believe what's there is there and people know what's there.  The human body is nothing to be ashamed of.

I've known lots of dancers who have had them onstage and it never seemed to bother their performances, but I've never asked them if it was a problem.

The truth is that erections (even during performances) are not a myth, but I think some people DO say that to scare male dancers.  But don't be frightened and don't be ashamed.  The beauty of ballet is the display of the body and its abilities.  Be proud of your body, in all its functions!

Good luck!  Keep dancing!  balletboy
