Hi Jim!

Welcome to the serious male dancer board!

I wanted to start ballet when I was four years old, but my mother refused.  She told me it would make me a queer!  My dad was cool!  He bought me books so I could study what ballet was about.  When I was in high school and had a bus pass I found a school on my bus route and started in formal ballet classes.  I started too late to be a professional, but have danced with regional companies.

Do you live at home?  Do you have a ballet school near by?

The major fear of parents when a son asks to take ballet, in my own experience and from what many guys have told me, is that the boy may be gay.  Most mothers want grand-children.

So if there is a "gay" issue at hand, you may have to deal with that head-on.

Even if there is the "gay" issue, you can still start classes.  Ballet is an excellent way to keep the body in shape.  You need exercise, so ballet can be an exercise alternative.

So that's an excuse!  You can just tell your parents the truth, you want to try this art as a way to express yourself through your body movements!  Some guys like to try painting, some music.  You just want to try ballet!

No one's ever too old to take ballet.  You may be able to train well enough to get into a regional company, but, sorry but I have to be real, you won't get into a company like the New York City Ballet.  Taking ballet will fulfill a desire you have.  Being happy with yourself is more important!
