prejudice

written by Danny at  on 06.06. at 20:44:42
I'm Danny a 28 year old straight guy from Britain. I've been doing Ballet for 2 years and I love it. Problem is I can't tell any friends or members of my family. They just wouldn't exept it. But the biggest problem I have is the prejudice I face in Dancewear shops here in the UK. The assistants view me with suspicion. They just don't seem to cater for the male dancer. What's more they don't seem interested and can't wait to get rid of me. If I ask for a size 9 split sole ballet shoe they ask "is that a child's 9?" they seem amazed that it's for me. I'm usually told that a 7 is the largest they have. They're very reluctant to let me try them on, "they would'nt fit you. You must have one size bigger than your normal shoes". That's utter rubbish as a size 7 Gamba fits me perfectly. These people should trying to encourage guys like me not driving us away. THere's enough prejudice towards male dancers without it coming from within the danceworld. I'm new to this forum and I think it's great. I'm sure a lot of young guys have been helped tremendously by the likes of Balletboy and Sanfrandanseur. I'd hoped to keep this short but I think I've said enough for the time being. If somebody however like to respond that would be great. Bye.
