Hi Todd!

Listen to what Tom says.  The proper way to absorb that force is to use the muscles of the leg.

There are over two hundred forms of arthritis, of which osteoarthritis (OA) is just one of them.  We used to think that OA was wear and tear on the joints, but recent research suggests that OA might be related to genetics and body chemistry more than wear and tear.  The way to protect the joints is the ability for the muscles to absorb the shock rather than letting the cartilagenous surfaces strike eachother.

Have you heard the recent controversy at the Bolshoi?  They have banned a ballerina because her weight was too great for her partner, and he hurt himself when holding her above.  This gal is little, by my standards, maybe 110 pounds.  I personally think the fault is with her partner, and his conformation.

Stress on the male body is common in ballet, and we males have to adapt to it.
