As a dance major it's important for you to know ballet.  Even if you don't pursue it after your required class is completed, you'll find ballet movement useful to your other dance-forms

When you take class respect the traditions of ballet, including the dress code.  Ballet dancers wear tights for very good reasons including non-restrictive movement and the teacher's ability to analyze your line and make corrections.  You wouldn't want to take jazz class in tights, so don't wear jazz pants to ballet.  Teachers will respect your commitment more if you wear the preferred attire.

Instead of trying find clothes that will make do but also make you look like someone who isn't serious, embrace the idea of wearing black tights, white t-shirt, and dance belt from the beginning of class.

A dance belt is necessary to protect you even if you don't wear tights.

Pulling on a pair of tights will not change your sexual orientation and anyone who thinks wearing proper dance clothing is "gay" has issues far too complex to discuss here.

In response to your questions and those on another thread, I am re-posting "Doctor Dancebelt's Guide - Everything you Need to Know About Dance Belts and More" on this forum.  Look for it. _______________________________________________________________________________

>Okay, so this upcoming semester I will be starting ballet for the 1st time in college.  I'm 18 years old, a dance major, and have been doing mostly hip-hop and modern dance stuff.  I only know a few ballet terms/moves (excuse my sp. ran jam, plie, chasse, pirouette, etc...) and quite frankly I am nervous as heck.  First of all, I don't know what to wear (I am hoping that jazz pants are acceptable- because I don't want to wear tights).  Types/brands of ballet shoes- do I need foot thongs?  What is the deal with the all white t-shirt?  Do I need a dancebelt, if I wear jazzpants?  And if I have to wear tights, what is a good dance belt? >Generally, I am afraid of what of what people are going to think.  I'm not gay, however I know this is a requirement in order for me to fulfill my knowledge of being a dancer.  >Can anybody give me any tips or advice, to ease this fear.  Thanks.
