Nothing in life is ever easy....

First class, there will be a lot of discussion on the basics and what to wear if it wasn't mention prior to the first class.  The positions will be taught in the first class (typically both feet and arms); maybe some tendus or plies.  Typically you willlearn all the adagio work first which starts with positions, leads to tendus, plies, ron-de-champs, battlements, passe, bla bla bla.  These exercises are done over and over and over and over again.  Even by professionals, and are an essential part of learning the body details of ballet.

As far as attire, go with what makes you comfortable.  I am not comfortable in tights for two reasons #1) girls clothes, #2) I get too hot.  I, as mentioned before, wear bike shorts/compression shorts, a T- or tank shirt, and somthing to keep the boys under control.

I agree with standing in a class full of leotards and tights.  Although in those late beginner classes it could be an eyeful.
